A Journey with my MGF: From Restoration to Commonwealth Game

In January 2021, I embarked on a new adventure after purchasing an MG F near Droitwich for £850. With just around 56,000 miles on the clock, it seemed like the perfect project car to occupy my time during the tight lockdown restrictions. Little did I know, this journey would be filled with unexpected challenges and unforgettable experiences. Just a week into ownership, while on my way to store the car, disaster struck. The timing belt shredded and got caught up in the engine, resulting in bent pistons and valves. Heartbroken, I arranged for the car to be recovered and taken to Derby for an engine rebuild, which would take about four weeks. During the car's time away, I decided to make the most of the situation by enhancing the interior. I scoured various sources for parts, purchasing new carpets, leather seats, and various trims to give the car a more presentable look. Additionally, I replaced the roof because the rear screen had a significant split. Externally, the car retained its original charm, looking much like it did when I first collected it.

Upon its return, the MGF ran perfectly after the engine rebuild, and I was eager to show it off. The car attended its first event in 2022, the Pride of Longbridge, where I met fellow enthusiasts of Rover and MG vehicles. It was at this show that I learned about an exciting opportunity: vehicles were needed for the opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Though I initially doubted my chances, I applied, as the requirements included red, white, or blue cars. With my MGF in striking Tahiti blue, I hoped for the best. To my surprise, I received the call: I was selected! The next challenge was preparing for rehearsals, which required me to dedicate a significant amount of my spare time. In June 2022, I returned to the historic Longbridge plant to meet the stunt coordinating team and fellow volunteer drivers, where we completed our first rehearsal. The thrill of knowing I was part of something monumental was exhilarating. As rehearsals progressed, we moved to the stadium, practicing the formation that would be showcased to millions on the actual night. The experience was unforgettable, and one of the highlights was watching the Red Arrows fly overhead.

Today, I cherish my MGF, which holds a special place in my heart. Our journey together has been filled with growth and adventure, and as any MG owner knows, a project car is never truly finished. I have dreams of one day restoring the body to make it look factory fresh, but for now, I relish the memories we’ve created together.
